The indole system of these two derivatives is substituted in position psilocybin and the alkaloids of ergot of rye, to which lsd belongs, have, until present, been the only natural indole derivatives exhibiting this particular structure. Just as with any other medication, it is essential to refrain from taking medications that interfere with the action of psilocybin. These mushrooms typically contain 2 to 4 percent psilocybin and a trace amount of psilocyn, another hallucinogenic substance.

Mankind has used psychedelic drugs for thousands of years. Originally, plant materials were discovered by many peoples to have the psychoactive properties now associated with known and often synthetic chemicals. In many ancient cultures, the use of these plant materials became incorporated into religious beliefs and practices, with the plants becoming sacraments used ceremonially and medicinally. Some of these sacramental practices continue to this day and are legally sanctioned. In modern Western science, both the active components of plant materials and newly-synthesized psychedelics have been identified and studied. The isolation of mescaline and psilocybin as the active principals in peyote and magic mushrooms respectively, coupled with the discovery of the activity of lysergic acid diethylamide LSD ; and the synthesis of phencyclidine, has led to the recognition of four main chemical classes of psychedelics. Although each class exhibits unique pharmacological effects, the three types of classical hallucinogens that share major mechanisms of action are the phenalkylamines such as mescaline, the indolealkylamines such as psilocybin, and the ergot alkaloids such as LSD. The more psychotomimetic class of compounds, the NMDA antagonists exemplified by phencyclidine or ketamine, includes dissociative anaesthetics that produce a different profile of effects, overlapping to only a limited degree with the effects of the classical psychedelics. The psychedelics differ from most other drugs that have been regulated by modern Western cultures as being "drugs of abuse". The most striking difference lies in the typical pattern of use of these drugs. While virtually all other legally defined drugs of abuse generally lead to frequent and uncontrolled consumption in humans and are self-administered by experimental animals, psychedelics are almost always ingested only occasionally by humans and are not self-administered by either rodents or monkeys. Coupled with the absence of any notable withdrawal phenomena associated with discontinuation of psychedelic exposure, these patterns of use indicate that the psychedelics are not "addictive" by virtually any definition of the term. Scientific research regarding the nature and neurobiological mechanisms subserving the effects of psychedelics flourished briefly after the chemical identification of specific compounds and, especially, the discovery in 1943 of LSD. However, the societal disturbances associated with the widespread popularity of psychedelics in the 1960s led to their legal control and a cessation of most scientific investigations. The tremendous advances in basic neuroscience, and the recognition of the importance of drugs acting on serotonin receptors in the treatment of psychotic disorders, has prompted a revitalization of research involving these compounds in recent years. As a result, important new information is now available regarding the neurobiological systems involved in the profound behavioral effects of psychedelics and relafen. His father was part of the then well known Motown group the Capitols which provided Stacey with an environment filled with the personalities and classic songs of Motown's tight knit community. Stacey became hooked on keyboards and drums at a young age and soon his infatuation with these base elements of music led him to the explore the tribal sounds that were percolation out of Detroits fertile underground. Inspired by the eras key stalwarts including Kraftwerk, and The Electrifyin' Mojo Stacey began piecing together his own projects which eventually led to him receiving the great honor of working in the studio side by side with fellow Detroit pioneers Kevin Reese Saunderson and Derrick May. Fast forward to 2003. Stacey Pullen is now one of the genres most respected pioneers with countless singles, remixes and his own label Black Flag. Stacey's exotic mixing style has taken him all over North and South America, Europe, and Asia. The summer of 2004, Angel Wings, Pleurocybella porrigens, caused more than a dozen fatalities in Japan and sickened around 50 people. There was no GI distress. The onset was tremor and weakness of the extremities lasting 2-11 days followed by severe consciousness disturbance and intractable seizures. Deaths occurred one week to 1 month after symptoms began. The vast majority of affected individuals had been on kidney dialysis or had previously impaired kidneys and the average age was around 70. Known as Sugihirtake, Pleurocybella porrigens is a popular edible in Japan. September and October of 2004 saw a huge fruiting of the mushrooms and people consumed a lot more than normal. Avoid consumption of Angel Wings, especially if you have compromised kidneys. Always consume mushrooms in moderation. Inocybe geophylla var. lilacina 4 people poisoned from all Inocybe species combined ; . This mushroom, like most members of the huge Inocybe genus, is laced with muscarine. Surprisingly, in thirty years we have only gathered 2 reports of human poisoning by Inocybe species. Symptoms in addition to cramps, vomiting and diarrhea are perspiration, salivation and tears. Your pupils shrink to pinpoints. Inocybe species can be lethal to dogs that are probably attracted by the somewhat fishy odor of many species. Since they are small brown mushrooms they probably do not appeal to people looking for a meal, thus saving many cases of poisoning. Psilocybe baeocystis 62 people poisoned from all Psilocybe species combined ; is just one of over a dozen hallucinogenic species found in the Pacific Northwest. The active ingredient of these mushrooms is psilocybin and psilocin. It grows readily in bark-mulched flowerbeds in maritime areas. Possessing mushrooms containing psilocybin or psilocin in the U.S. is treated the same as possession of heroin or cocaine. Psilocybe cyanescens is a very potent species containing over 1% hallucinogenic material. It also grows in bark-mulched beds in maritime areas. People consume these mushrooms intentionally for the hallucinations they can produce. Sometimes the effect is. In essence, current laboratory-based tests are oriented more toward the potential of the drug than to treat the thrombus and ritalin. Prevention, a collaborative research initiative focused primarily on examining how toxic chemicals may influence the development of autism in children. He is also a member of the Center for Neuroscience and the M.I.N.D. Institute. In his 18 years at U.C. Davis, Dr. Pessah has co-authored more than 110 peerreviewed papers. This past March, Dr. Pessah released a study connecting thimerosal, a mercurybased preservative that until recently was present in routine vaccines, with disruptions in antigen-presenting cells, known as dendritic cells, obtained from mice. The study provided the first evidence that dendritic cells which help to protect us from external pathogens or harmful substances ; can be damaged by thimerosal, potentially altering the immune system's ability to respond to external influences. In keeping with his desire to always work toward an understanding of relevance to human conditions, plans are now underway to follow up this work by drawing blood from children with autism participating in the CHARGE Childhood Risk from Genes and the Environment ; study to specifically look for evidence of changes in dendritic cell and natural killer NK ; cell functions and responses. Dr. Pessah's work on dendritic cells suggested that thimerosal may be acting by affecting calcium Ca2 + ; signaling processes. Ca2 + is a key molecule that regulates many different biological processes in the body. The Pessah lab is actively studying how dysfunctions of calcium channels, molecules that transmit Ca2 + signals, contribute to heritable diseases and susceptibility, for example, john hopkins psilocybin. E. Use sanitary technique when pouring or preparing medications into the appropriate container and rohypnol. After reading some of the spectacular success stories that many have reported from a single small dose of psilocynin or lsd ; , it is easy to lose sight of the fact that psiloccybin is just another medication, and in order to successfully treat cluster headaches with pxilocybin certain rules must be followed, just as is the case with all medications.

P-94 EPIDURAL BOLUS ADMINISTRATION AND CONTINUOUS EPIDURAL INFUSION OF FENTANYL DIFFER IN THEIR MECHANISM OF ACTION Ginosar, Y. Riley, E.T.; Angst , M.S. Department of Anesthesiology, Stanford University Medical School, Stanford, CA Controversy exists as to whether epidural fentanyl acts predominantly by a spinal or systemic mechanism. This study tested the hypothesis that the predominant mechanism of fentanyl action depends upon the mode of its administration. Method: 10 healthy volunteers have completed this double-blind, randomized, cross-over study. Epidural catheters were placed at L3 4. separate study days, subjects received either an epidural fentanyl bolus regime 0.03mg followed 210 min later by 0.1mg ; or an epidural fentanyl infusion regime 0.03mg h followed 210 minutes later by 0.1mg hr for 200 min ; . Using both an experimental heat pain model and an experimental electrical pain model, analgesic effects of fentanyl were assessed at the leg and face 3 times before and 30, 60, 120, min after first drug administration. Finally, an analgesic assessment was made after intravenous administration of 0.4mg naloxone. Plasma fentanyl was measured at each time point. Results: The figure depicts the change in heat c ; necessary to cause maximum tolerable pain as a function of time after drug administration. The graph depicting the % change in electrical current required to cause maximum tolerable pain as a function of time after drug administration was almost identical and has not been represented here for lack of space. Fentanyl bolus administration caused significant analgesic effects at the leg * ; but not the head. Fentanyl infusion caused significant analgesic effects at both the leg * ; and the head # ; . No difference could be detected between the magnitude of the analgesic effect at the leg and head for epidural infusion of fentanyl. Conclusion: Our data suggest that epidural bolus administration of fentanyl acts predominantly at the spinal site thereby providing segmental analgesia. Conversely, epidural infusion seemed to act significantly at supraspinal sites, so providing systemic analgesia. AMPHETAMINE VARIANTS 1. DOM Dimethoxy-methyl-amphetamine nicknamed STP, "Serenity, Tranquility, & Peace ; Synthetic drug. Introduced to the drug scene in 1967. Chemically related to both mescaline and amphetamine. 100 times more potent than mescaline, 30 to 50 times less potent than LSD. Very seldom encountered on the street today. Effects reported to last up to 24 hours. 2. DMT - Dimethyltryptamine Short acting hallucinogen found in the seeds of a plant native to the West Indies and in parts of South America. Also produced synthetically in clandestine labs. DMT is not taken orally. It is usually snorted or combined with vegetable matter and smoked. It is rarely injected. Effects last only 30 minutes and will produce mainly hallucinations. For this reason it is sometimes known as the "Businessman's Trip" or "the lunch hour trip" May cause psychological but not physical dependence. The powder form is usually tan or brown in color. 3. DET - Diethyltryptamine Fast-acting synthetic analogue of DMT and is chemically related to bufotenine and psilocybin, although it has yet to be found in plant life. Effects may last 2 or 3 hours. Parsley, tobacco, tea, or marijuana leaves are soaked in DET solution, dried, and then either smoked or ingested. There is little demand for DET and its use is rare. 4. MDA Methylenedioxy-amphetamine Related to both mescaline and amphetamine. First appeared in 1967. Can be taken orally or IV. Effects occur within 30 to 60 minutes and last between 6 to 10 hours. 5. MDMA MethyleneDioxy-methylamphetamine Ecstasy or XTC ; Approx. $20 per tablet. "Love Drug Effect" - warm feeling. Not as potent hallucinogen as PCP or LSD. These drugs are widely used at "raves" Usually taken orally, sometimes snorted and rarely injected. Synthetically produced. Packaged as a white, reddish or brownish powder. Plastic capsule, tablet or powder on the street. Usually taken orally, although some users prefer snorting. Note : see next two pages for further information on MDMA. Dietary supplements are not considered "drugs" by many patients, when, in actual fact, they are. The biggest difference in herbs and formulary drugs is their regulatory status. If herbs or supplements meet strict FDA requirements senna, cascara, psyllium ; , they can be sold as prescriptions or over-the-counter. Does that mean that all other herbs or supplements are "safe"? Answer: Not necessarily. Under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 dietary supplements are considered safe, unless proven Unsafe by the FDA. Herbs are also not required to demonstrate bioequivalence. 1, for example, grow psilocybin. Chemotherapy is a well-established risk factor for acute myeloid leukemia AML ; but little is known about other prescription drugs and AML risk. We report data from a population-based Los Angeles County study in which 299 matched case-control pairs had complete data on prescription drug use and 88% of cases were subtyped according to the French-American-British FAB ; criteria. Cases were diagnosed between 1987 and 1994. Prescription nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug NSAID ; use for at least 4 weeks in the 2 to 10 years before diagnosis was associated with decreased risk odds ratio 0.5, 95% confidence interval 0.3, 1.0; p 0.04 ; with dose-response most evident for FAB subtype M2 OR 0.6, CI: 0.1, 2.9 for duration 6 months; OR 0.2, CI: 0.0, 1.6 for 6 months ; . For subtype M4, ORs increased with increasing duration of benzodiazepine use in the 2 to 10 years before diagnosis OR 1.5, CI: 0.3, 9.0 for 6 months vs. OR 5.0, CI: 0.6, 42.8 for 6 months ; . These results suggest that prescription drugs other than chemotherapy may have FAB subtype-specific effects on AML risk. 2004 Wiley-Liss, Inc. P23 EFFECTS OF ARGON LASER TRABECULOPLASTY IN YOUNGER GLAUCOMA PATIENTS Karolina Blazevska Buzarovska, Elena Dzajkovska, Vesna Jordanova Dimovska University Eye Clinic Medical faculty Skopje, Republic of Macedonia PURPOSES To evaluate the effects of ALT in younger patients with primary open angle glaucoma, with no other present vascular risc factors as a less invasive and comfortable treatment. METHODS We have treated 35 patients in the glaucoma clinic with ALT The mean age was 35-45 years, visual aquity 0.50.7, IOP between 24-29 mmHg, initial visual field defects, and C D ratio 0.4-0.6.They all had normall blood pressure and no other vascular risc factors. The ALT perfomances were-E; 600-700 mA, time exp 0.15-0.25 and 200 pulses were applicated 100 on the upper and 100 on the lower half of the ICA.The patients were followed up for 3 years, from 20002003, The VF the IOP and the VA were followed up. We have contol group of 25 patients with age from 40-45 where only local treatment with beta blocker drops Betoptic ; was used. RESULTS The results that we have come to are that in the group of patients treated with ALT the level of IOP was 20-22 mmHg in the period of follow up, and the deterioration of VF was potponed; the VF stayed stabile in the period of follow up.In the group treated with drops the IOP level was from 2224 mmHg, and we had deterioration of VF in patients. CONCLUSIONS ALT is a usefull treatment in the initial stadium of POAG in younger patients with no other vascular risk factors. Ironically, the development of rationally designed psychopharmaceuticals may make the use of polypharmacy even more necessary than it has been in the past.
